چکیده
A model for the cathode catalyst layer (CL) is presented, which validated with previous experimental data in terms of both performance and oxygen transport resistance. The includes a 1D macroscopic description proton, electron across CL thickness, locally coupled to microscopic that describes toward Pt sites. Oxygen from channel ionic membrane are incorporated through integral boundary conditions. complemented effective electrochemical properties extracted multiple works. results show contribution thin ionomer film Pt/ionomer interface increases inverse roughness factor. Direct Numerical Simulation Modeling of Bilayer Cathode Catalyst Layers in Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells
A pore-scale description of species and charge transport through a bilayer cathode catalyst layer CL of a polymer electrolyte fuel cell using a direct numerical simulation DNS model is presented. Two realizations of the bilayer catalyst layer structure are generated using a stochastic reconstruction technique with varied electrolyte and void phase volume fractions. The DNS calculations predict ...
متن کاملCatalyst supports for polymer electrolyte fuel cells.
A major challenge in obtaining long-term durability in fuel cells is to discover catalyst supports that do not corrode, or corrode much more slowly than the current carbon blacks used in today's polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. Such materials must be sufficiently stable at low pH (acidic conditions) and high potential, in contact with the polymer membrane and under exposure to hydrogen ...

The cathode catalyst layer (CL) in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) has been optimized through a balance of ionomer and porosity distributions, oth playing important roles in affecting proton conduction and oxygen transport through a thick CL of DMFC. The effects of fabrication rocedure, ionomer content, and Pt distribution on the microstructure and performance of a cathode CL under low air f...
متن کاملModeling transport in polymer-electrolyte fuel cells.
In this review, we have examined the different models for polymer-electrolyte fuel cells operating with hydrogen. The major focus has been on transport of the various species within the fuel cell. The different regions of the fuel cell were examined, and their modeling methodologies and equations were elucidated. In particular, the 1-D fuel-cell sandwich was discussed thoroughly because it is t...
متن کاملPerformance Improvement of PEM Fuel Cells Using Air Channel Indentation; Part I: Mechanisms to Enrich Oxygen Concentration in Catalyst Layer
A three dimensional, compressible, steady, one phase flow of reactant-product mixture in the air side electrode of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is numerically studied in this paper. The mixture is composed of three species: oxygen, nitrogen and water vapor. The performance of the cell is enhanced by partial blockage of the flow field channels. Various types of these blocks also ca...
